Thompson Springs (Chicago) With Special Guests Jack Klatt and Hemma

  • Palmer's Bar 500 Cedar Ave S Minneapolis, MN 55454 United States (map)

Do not miss this night of some of the truly fine American Music! Let's give a warm West Bank Welcome to Chicago's Thompson Springs!

Thompson Springs is the project of Chicago native Matt Smith. His dreamy, hazy songwriting, which PBS called "a mix of folk with a southern/western feel,” and love of the road and unknown, has led the band down a circuitous route on tours across Europe, New Zealand, and the expanse of America. Detroit Public Radio (WDET) noted that they pull influences from classic songwriters, like Tom Petty, to more recent indie artists, like Kurt Vile. Thompson Springs started working with Kurt Vile collaborator Rob Laakso as well as Wilco’s Pat Sansone for their debut album, Undertones, which they released on Dropped Beauty Recordings in 2020. 2023 will bring a new album, Standby, produced by Pat Keen of Humbird, and recorded live, featuring the full 6 piece band and the debut of harmonica player Ryan Suzuka.

Musical missionary, tireless troubadour, and producer Jack Klatt isn’t one to be easily categorized or relegated to a narrow niche. He comes across as a young man with a wizened and worldly perspective, an artist who possesses a timeless sensibility of both place and purpose. Yet, his artistic integrity extends to more than simply his songs. It embodies both execution and intent... the way he’s mastered his deft finger-picking technique and used that sturdy approach to bring his material an authenticity reminiscent of the most revered musicians and storytellers.

Hemma comes from a family of singers, carving her own path for the last decade as a budding balladeer. Sometimes with a full band, many times a soloist, Hemma captivates the audience as she paints pastoral songs that draw on life lived on both coasts - an identity of west, Midwest and east all swim in the swells of what feels like the after-thought of a drum machine, keeping time and tapping contemporary wells of magic. She returns to the studio with Sean Carey this winter for a follow-up full length to her 2020 EP Tomorrow River.
